The Augusta National spectacular tees-off the Major golf season every year and has a special place in the heart of golfers around the World.

For many like me the Masters is what first sparked our passion for the game, and has created some of our fondest golfing memories and images.

Beyond the green jacket, blooming azaleas and the Sunday roars of Augusta National lies a treasure trove of little-known Masters facts and figures.

The holes surrounding Amen Corner’s are perhaps the most famous stretch of golf in the World.

Over the years Masters green jackets have been won and lost over this trio of holes.

The final hole in the set is perhaps the ultimate risk and reward hole, the par-5 13th called Azalea.

It’s the hole that ignited Jack Nicklaus’s charge for the title in 1986.

This is also where 2010 final round leader Phil Mickelson drove into the trees.

Then went all in with a 6 iron and hit one of the most greatest shots Augusta has ever seen to 6 feet!

But all this drama was nearly lost.

The 13th at Augusta wasn’t always meant to be a three-shotter.

Course designer Bobby Jones originally envisioned it as a par-4!

But during early course testing, the decision was made to give players a chance to chase eagles.

Whoever persuaded Jones to change his mind at the last-minute couldn’t have known they’d be responsible for some of the most dramatic moments in Masters history.

It’s a well-known Masters Fact that the greens at Augusta are lightning-fast.

The glass like putting surfaces on every hole are legendary.

Tournaments have been cruelly snatched away by the smallest mis-read.

But exactly how fast are they?

The truth is kept a very well guarded secret.

Even members of the grounds crew are often left in the dark.

Some in the know have suggested they could be somewhere between 12 to 14 on the Stimp.

Whatever the truth we can all agree they are like nothing most golfers have ever swung a putter on before!

The organising committee for the 2025 Masters really nailed this short movie that will definitely get you in the mood for Augusta!

It’s a little known Masters fact that the original layout of the course was not what we know so well today.

In the inaugral 1934 event known as the Augusta National Invitational Tournament the front nine was actually the modern day back nine!

So the 18th where we now see Champions crowned was actually the 9th.

The layout was reversed one year later in 1935 into the front and back nine holes we are so familiar with.

Given the drama that’s unfolded over the closing holes in the past 90 years we’d say it was the right call!

Anyone who’s watched the watched the Masters knows water plays a major role in both the design and appearance of the golf course at Augusta.

And it always has a perfect dark blue tint that constrast beautifully with the pristine green of the fairways and the white of the bunkers.

But is visually perfect aesthetic the water’s natural state?

Maybe not…

In 1996 Golf Digest’s Mike Stachura was fortunate enough to play the course.

And he sneakily took a sample from the water in front of the 15th green.

Lab tests later revealed the water contained food dye, similar to what’s used in blue-colored icing you might find on a kid’s birthday cake.

After the 2024 Masters Augusta National Golf Club chairman Fred Ridley announced some interesting improvements to the facilities at the course.

And first phase includes something for for VIPs and members that most attendees will never see:

An underground parking garage located beneath Berckmans Place.

The new VIP garage in operation for the 2025 event while the second phase will follow in 2026, which Riley described as a

“three-level state-of-the-art facility, designed to anticipate every need for players, their families, and support teams.”

As with most things at Augusta National there is some mystery around what this development will ultimately be used for.

However, it has been rumored to be the long-awaited on-site accommodation for players, their families and support teams.

Up until now only the amateur competitors are permitted to stay in the clubhouse during Masters week in the famous Crow’s Nest accomodation at the top of the building.

It’s estimated there are approximately 300 members of the most exclusive golf club in the World.

But you won’t be able to find a list of members list – it’s another Augusta secret!

Although in 2015, Bloomberg listed 118 members of the club

According to golf.com original membership stake in Augusta was $350, that’s less than $5,000 today.

If you were to be invited to join today it’s likely the initiation fee would be in the range of $40,000.

And the yearly dues are estimated at “a few thousand” dollars per year.

There may be other costs involved, whether for guest fees or on-site lodging, but those are also relatively low.

Even so those costs to be able to secure the most exlusive tee-time in golf may surprise many golfers!

Augusta National is one of the few places in the U.S. that is permanently classified as a no-fly zone.

This restriction is only enforced during the Masters week but is another demonstration of the influence and attentiont to detail of the tournament organisers.

The FAA restricts aircraft from flying within three nautical miles and up to 3,000 feet over the course.

However, in recent years there have been some of the dreaded planes with trailing banners appearing in the skies nearby.

While outside the no-fly zone can still be seen from the course which must turn a few of the green jackets a little puce with air-rage!

The Masters is the only golf major played on the same venue every year.

However, the golf course at Augusta National is constantly evolving.

Nearly every year between Masters tournaments, an army of greenkeepers and course designers set to work with subtle layout changes.

New tees are added, bunkers are reshaped, water diverted and greens are gently tweaked.

This not only ensures competitors face different challenges every year.

But also that no champion ever wins on the exact same course as his predecessor.

Golf fans at Augusta are known as patrons and have a reputation for theirgood behaviour.

But that’s no accident.

There’s a strict code of conduct, including no running, no electronic devices, and a ban on shouting phrases like “You da man!”

This tradition started when a fan was quietly removed for violating the club’s high standards.

Every Masters fan knows the sound of a Sunday Augusta roar!

TV viewers and patrons on the grounds know soemthing special has happened when the shouts go up!

However, it has to be said that tens of thousands of patrons stomping around the grounds is not exactly perfect conditions for attracting flocks of our feathered friends!

So the mystery of the birdsong remains unsolved and the question about where the TV coverage birdsong comes from becomes even more intriguing!

We all know no one has ever won the Masters after claiming victory in the Par-3 Contest.

Ray Floyd came closest in 1990 but lost out in a play-off to Nick Faldo.

But here’s another Masters Fact that’s rarely mentioned…

…Just 2 players have ever gone on to win a green jacket after they won the par-3 event.

Ben Crenshaw won the par 3 in 1987 and his second Masters in 1995.

Similarly, Vijay Singh won the par 3 in 1994.

He then had to wait another 6 years for his only green jacket!

Tom Watson is the only player to hold both titles at once, but only for four days!

He won the Par 3 Contest in 1982 as the defending Masters champion.

Pádraig Harrington is the only player with three wins on the short course.

As we know appearance is everything when it comes to the course at Augusta.

But you might be wondering why unlike other major golf tournaments the course looks so remarkably perfect even on Sunday afternoon

This despite thousands of patrons trampling across the grounds as they try to get the best vantage point.

And players completing over 1000 tournament rounds across the fairways and greens during the week.

But in this case it seems like just attention to detail and sheer hard work on behalf of the greenkeeping teams.

To help that battered turf recover, every night an army of people waters, mows and scatters rye seed over that worn out ground.

This happens especially on the Saturday evening, before the final round to make sure everything looks immaculate for the big day.

There are rumours of green paint being used in the most extreme cases but the club has never confirmed this story!

The presentation of the Green Jacket to The Masters winneris in the Butler Cabin and the Jim Nantz interview is the one of the most famous scenes in golf.

Something all players must visualise at the start of the week.

The jacket is slipped onto the new Champion by the previous winner.

But how does the jacket fit so well?

A lesser known Masters fact is that the jacket we see is borrowed off an Augusta member with roughly the same build as the winner.

The champion is later measured for their own tailored version.

The Masters Green Jacket was first introduced in 1937 and are supplied in the main by the Hamilton Tailoring Company of Cincinnati.

Each jacket costs the surprisingly modest amount of just $250.

But it is still one of the most iconic and sought after “trophies” in sport.

So much so that my brother and I as kids actually had a green blazer we’d award each other as the winner of our annual Summer “Masters” competition on our Grandad’s local course!

However, please keep that Master Facts story to yourself as Augusta are very protective of their Green Jackets.

They trademarked the name in 2010 and have even filed a lawsuit against the sale of a champion’s Green Jacket!

The Masters may be the tournament on every golfers bucket list – but it’s also the hardest to get into.

The 2025 Masters field is currently around 92 players, not including past champions who aren’t playing and two amateurs who qualified but since turned pro so are no longer eligible.

This compares to around 150 players at most of the other 3 majors.

2018 was the smallest field in Masters history with just 87 players and last year the 2024 Masters had just 89 competitors.

We all have favourite hole at Augusta National – even if we’ve never played there!

Possibly the most popular is the par 3 16th – personally I might opt for the 15th – there’s just something about that second shot down the hill and over the water that seems to sway the outcome of the tournament one way or another!

Statistically the hardest hole in Masters history is the 520 yard par 4 11th.

The hole tee-off the Amens Corner trio by doglegging right into a green guarded by water.

UK golfers of a certain era will remember it as the hole Nick Faldo won his first Masters after a play-off with Scott Hoch.

The 11th known as “White Dogwood” has played an average of 0.303 over par through the years, with the 10th just behind at +0.299.

The ‘easiest’ hole historically is the ultimate risk and reward par 5 13th, which as we discovered in our first 2025 Masters Facts was nearly a par 4.

The 13th named “Azalea” has an average score of 4.775 (-0.225) over the course of The Masters history.

There are 44 bunkers, across the Augusta National golf course

32 of those protect greenside, and 12 are bedded in the fairways.

The 14th is the only hole on the course without a sandy hazard.

Spectators and green-keeping teams across the world have marvelled for years over how the bunkers at the Masters are so white,

And it may come as a surprise to many.

Known as ‘Spruce pine’ the sand is in fact not sand at all but granulated quartz!

So pure is the material that is a crucial ingredient in production of semiconductors for computers and mobiles.

The sand gets its name from the district it is mined in the Spruce Pine Mineral District of North Carolina.

The bunkers at Augusta have been filled with this “sand” for nearly 50 years since it was used for the 1975 Masters Tournament.

But before you rush online to amke an order for your local club you should know the potential cost.

The demand for the quartz being so high and the fact this specific type is only mined in North Carolina it currently sells for well over $10,000 a tonne!

The final of our 2025 Masters Facts might be the one that shocks most golf fans.

Most us probably believe that becoming Masters Champion and earning a Green Jacket by winning one of the most difficult golf tournaments on the roster would give you automatic membership of the Augusta National Golf Club.

Well we’d all be wrong!

Yes if you win the Masters and are awarded the Green Jacket you become an honorary member of the club.

This means you will be invited back every year to play in the tournament for as long as you accept it.

However, it does not entitle you to just rock up and play in the Sunday morning roll-up!

The final of our 2025 Masters Facts might be the one that shocks most golf fans.

Jack Nicklaus, former amateur standout turned Champions Tour Pro John Harris, and ten-time LPGA major winner Annika Sorenstam are the only three pro golfers currently members at Augusta National Golf Club.

Arnold Palmer was the fourth member of this select group before he sadly passed away in 2016.

This may not seem fair given how hard it is to win the Masters in the first place.

After all there have only been 56 individual winners of the 86 tournaments played to date.

But maybe there’s too many ex-Presidents and politicians, Business Leaders and PGA Tour Board Members fighting for those 300 members locker spaces.

Plus perhaps the committee feel everyone has to havea fair chance at the end of season club medal!
