During the course of our annual golf event schedule we travel approxiamtely 64,828 miles which is roughly equivalent to circling the Earth’s equator 2.6 times!
So when it comes to travelling with golf clubs and bags we have more experience than most!
Here our our Golf Travel Expert advice for flying with golf bags:
- Always use a golf travel bag cover – a case cover like this Club Glove from Titleist will protect your clubs and if secured with a lock give you additional peace of mind. Add in a strong arm protector and an Apple Tag tracker for additional peace of mind.
- Protect your iron heads – either with specifiaclly designed iron covers or in a worse case covering them with your socks! The socks stop the clubheads banging together which can cause chips or scratches – although don’t use your favourite pairs as they can come bag a bit holey!!
- Alternative options are to tape the iron shafts together or putting the clubs in your golf bag head down both of which tend to stop golf club “chatter” (heads banging together!)
- Pack soft items like waterproofs or top layers around your golf clubs to give them additional protection and padding.
- Get specialist golf travel insurance cover before you travel – a small investment up front could save a fortune later.
- Book ahead where you can to save excessive golf bag charges – as we can see from the story at the top of this article – planning ahead will keep your costs (and stress levels) to a minimum!
- Remember to weigh your golf travel bag before you travel to make sure it is within the weight restriction. Include golf balls and any items you intend to keep in the bag when it is in the hold.

However, most golfers use a “soft” layer of towels or rain gear to protect club heads.
As long as you stay under the weight limit (usually 23kg), staff rarely inspect the contents, but avoid packing heavy electronics or liquids there, as they may be flagged during security screening.
