The Emerald Coast Turns an Extra Shade of Green(card)
Based in Sables d’Or des Pins, which is located along the Côte d’Emeraude – The Emerald Coast, and a stone’s throw from Cap Fréhel. This delightful town is nestled among pines and dunes along a vast lagoon. The huge sandy beach is considered one of the finest in Brittany. The town has a good choice of bars and restaurants. The golf programme included a round on each of Sables d’Or, Dinard, St Malo and the European Challenge Tour course of Val Andre.
Round 1: Brenda Gentle Leads the Way
The first round was played at the nearby Sables d’Or course. The summer weather was yet to arrive as we set off in breezy conditions. However, with the exception of one heavy rain shower at the beginning of the round the forecasted rain stayed away. This was arguebly the weakest of the four courses but it demanded accuracy from the tee to secure a good score.
Brenda Gentle had a great start to the week coming in with the leading score of the day on 33 points. Alistair Walker was just a point back with 32 and Gerry Gentle, having had a tough start to the round recovered well to card a 31.
Round 2: Gerry Leads the Hunting Pack Through the St Malo Forest
The second round was held the following day at St Malo Golf Club. Set in the forest, ancient hunting grounds of Robert Surcouf, and surrounded by the vast Mirloup lake, the course boasts spectacular views, the closing par 5 in front of the clubhouse with water protecting the green, this is a great course and a pleasure to play.
Gerry Gentle continued his form completing the round with 38 points, three ahead of Neil McGarva on 35. Colin Baker came in with a solid 34 points whilst Brenda Gentle finished the day with 33.
At the half way point Gerry Gentle had a three point lead over Brenda Gentle. Neil McGarva was one shot back on 65 and Colin Baker was still very much in the reckoning on 63.
Round 3: Brenda Keeps it in the Family at Beautiful Dinard
The third round was held at Dinard Golf Club, this is a beautiful spot and whilst some of the fairways were not in pristine condition the location and vistas more than made up for it. The wind was blowing and conditions were not the easiest but it was a pleasure to be out there experiencing one of the area’s oldest courses.
The battle of the Gentles continued and this time it was Brenda’s turn to take the leading score of the day with 36. Gerry finished the round on 34, whilst Colin and Neil were still in the mix after scores of 32 and 31 respectively.
Round 4: Tough Scoring on Final Round at Stunning Val Andre
Going into the final day, Gerry had a slender one shot lead over Brenda. Neil and Colin would need a quick start being seven and eight shots behind the leader but we have seen these gaps closed many times before. The last round was played at the highly regarded Val Andre golf club. The location of the course and some of the holes along the coast were stunning. Accuracy was required from the tee and any errant shots made recovery and scoring very tough. Being in position for your approach shots was vital.
Needless to say scoring was tough and 16 points was the highest on the front nine from the whole group. Unfortunately for both Colin and Neil the fast start required to put pressure on the leaders did not happen and at the half way stage Gerry, although only scoring 14 had increased his lead over the chasing pack. A solid back nine would see him home and claim the win.
Gerry Holds off Challenge Solid Back Nine
Gerry did exactly that and despite a late charge by Neil with 19 points on the back nine it would not be
enough to catch the leaders. Gerry finished the day on 28 points and 131 in total. He claimed the victory over Brenda by just two points. Neil finished in third place on 127 and Colin came fourth on 121.
Thank you to everyone who took part in this event and congratulations to Gerry who qualifies for our Grand Finals, which will be held in La Manga later this year.
